Tuesday Tips and Technique: Shrinky Dink bracelet

Hi Stickle fans!!!  Chas here and like I promised during the Surf, Sun and Stickle blog hop, here I am to show you how I made the shrinky dink bracelet.

Since it was a summer blog hop, I know right away that I wanted to use my Life's a Beach cricut cartridge. Luckily for me that cartridge had a charm setting on it so that was perfect for my bracelet.

I used the two inch size for my charms.

The plastic cut like butter as long as the mat was sticky.  No problems what's so ever.

After I had my shapes cut out, I used my permanent makers to color them, actually my daughter did the coloring.  I tried to use the stampin up ink markers but it rubbed off the plastic.  I'm not sure if copic would work since I don't have any.  One thing to remember is the color will be a lot darker once the plastic is shrunk down.

I tried putting stickles on first but that did not work out. Plus you use a lot more of the stickles before you shrink compared to after.

One of the main things to remember if you are making necklaces or bracelets.  Make sure you use a hole punch before you shrink it.

I used my heat gun.  It only took a few seconds to shrink it down.  But be careful of your fingers.  I used a paper clip to hold the plastic in place.

Here is the after picture.

See how much darker the color is on the charm.

Next is the fun part.  But shrinking was really fun but hey this is a stickle blog.  :)  I used golden rod for the outside of my charm.

After it's all dry, just get out your favorite beads and make that piece of jewelry that you want.  One think that I did not think of when I was making my bracelet, was to use jump rings for the charms.  They would not lay flat like I wanted to.  But I think the bracelet turned out really good for the first time.

My daughter and her friends are making a My Little Pony bracelet for when we go to Bronycon this weekend.  Check out my blog  Scrapin Lizards,  to see their creations.

Tips & Techniques Thursday: Stickles & Paper Flowers

Hello to all of the other Stickles Lovers out there, it's so nice to know I'm not alone and it’s a real honour to be asked to share something with you all at All That Stickles!  For those who don't know me, my name is Kate Palmer, though I'm much better known as Sparkle Tart, and I live in sunny Queensland in Australia, with my husband and two little Birman cat terrors.  I love to share on my blog and YouTube channel and create a wide variety of projects suitable for all sorts of art and craft.   I love papercrafts and creating and I mostly love and adore sparkly things (in case you couldn't guess that from my nickname).  Today I thought I'd show you a neat little technique for colouring your own flowers and Stickles is the final step needed to take these from simply gorgeous to super stunning.

What you'll need:

  • White or cream mulberry paper flowers
  • Copic Markers: R39, R35 , E31 & E35, and Copic Colorless Blender Ink (Various Ink refill)
  • Lindy's Stamp Gang Starburst Spray in Creme Brulee Cream
  • Stickles - Pewter
  • Heat Gun

What to do:

Begin with a white or light coloured paper flowers (I like roses and gardenias because they are easy to colour). Choose 3 or 4 colours of Copic marker (for the shabby chic look I chose a dark and a light brown and 2 reds (mid tone and dark).  I colour up a few different sizes at once so that I have a small coordinating bouquet ready.

Colour own flower 1

Colour 1/2 of each petal with your lightest colour (mine was E31) working from the outer edge in towards the flower centre - make sure not to colour the whole petal.  It should look like this when done.

Colour own flower 1

Next using the darkest brown (E35) apply a thin strip of colour to the outer edge of each petal  - I just run the side of my marker along the edge of the petals.

Colour own flower 1

Then with the lightest red R35, apply a thin strip of colour to the outer edge of the petal BUT don't cover up all of the dark brown - add colour quite sparingly.  Again I just scrape the side of my marker along the edge of the petals.  It should look a little like this.

Colour own flower 1

Lastly with the darkest red R39, apply a thin strip of colour to the outer edge of the very top petals only - leave the petals closest to the leaves without this colour.

Colour own flower 1

The next step is to apply a few drops of Colorless Blender to each petal - add the liquid to the outer edge of the petals - the fluid will wick towards the flower centre and drag a little colour along with it.

Colour own flower 1

Dry the flower with a heat gun / embossing gun - this will take up to 45 seconds depending on how wet the flower is.

Colour own flower 1

Drying with the heat gun will not only evaporate the belnding fluid, but it also results in discoloured edges to the petals (they darken considerably) giving a beautiful result.  You could leave it here but you'll be missing the glitz!

Colour own flower 1

Soak each flower with a pale or colourless mica spray - my favourite is Creme Brulee Cream, which is a Starburst spray from Lindy's Stamp Gang.

Colour own flower 1

Dry the spray with a heat gun or embossing gun.

Colour own flower 1

It should now look a bit like this.

Colour own flower 1

The final step is to add Stickles of your choice to the petal edges, you can add as much or as little as you like, but this secret ingredient really makes the flowers sparkle.  I've only added a hint of stickles, though believe me you can see the glittery goodness from every angle!

Colour own flower 1m

Leave it somewhere safe to dry, and they should look a little like this...

For all the visual learners out there you can see the whole process from start to finish in the clip below:

Aren't these beautiful!  Now don't just limit yourself to the colours I chose, experiment, try mixing colours, even mixing up your products - any way you try it it's likely to look stunning.
I hope you've enjoyed this idea - and can use this in your creative projects.
May your day sparkle,
Kate P.

Tips & Techniques Tuesday: Watercolors and Stickles -- a Beautiful Combination!

Happy Tuesday, ATS friends!  Julie here from Muddy Paws & Inky Fingers with today's tutorial.

I've had this ready to go for several weeks, and didn't realize how similar it was to guest designer, DoBea's post a couple weeks ago.
Today's post is the frugal crafters version!

Several years ago, I bought the cheapest watercolor paint set I could find at Michael's, thinking I wasn't going to use it much.  Well, I've used it a lot, and it's still going strong.  I've certainly gotten my $5 worth out of it, that's for sure! Today's technique uses that watercolor paint set, and Stickles, of course. Let's get started!
You'll need:
Watercolor Paints
Crystal Stickles
Watercolor Paper (I used a 5x7 watercolor card by Strathmore)
Paintbrush
Water or Squirt bottle
Stamp of Choice
White Ribbon (I used 1/4 inch silk)

Start by painting the watercolor on to the paper where you want, using the colors you want.

Wait for the paint to dry, or use your heat gun to speed up the process.  Then, use your finger to spread the Crystal Stickles across the surface of the paint.

Again, wait for this to dry, then stamp your image. I used this large butterfly by Unity. It was stamped using Tim Holtz distress ink in Stormy Skies.
I wanted the ribbon to match the butterfly, so I used a Distress Stain to dye my ribbon.  I could have used either the watercolor paints or alcohol inks to dye it also.

Here's the supplies for the ribbon dying step:
Distress Stain, Crystal Stickles, white ribbon, squirt or mist bottle, and a small paint brush.
I ran the Distress Stain bottle directly across the ribbon, saturating it with the color. Then, while the ribbon was still wet, I squirted some water on my craft sheet to dilute the Crystal Stickles slightly, then painted the Stickles across the ribbon.

Here, you can see where I have covered the left portion of the ribbon with the Stickles. Then, let it dry.

After the ribbon is dry, you have the fun of attaching it to the card, tying a bow, and admiring your beautiful artwork.  Sparkly AND inexpensive.  You gotta love that!

I'll leave you with one more close up of the ribbon, so you can see the Stickles sparkling in it.

Don't forget about the current linky party.  The color is Waterfall.  We're just getting underway with this linky party so you have plenty of time to link up -- Aug. 2.

I have a giveaway going on over on my blog, with the winner being announced today. Stop over for a couple more details about this card, and to see if you're the winner.
